Fad Diets are a Fad for a Reason
Fad diets are diets that promise quick weight loss and generally cost a fortune. There are numerous diets that are being promoted on late night infomercials that promise massive amounts of weight loss, but realistically will it ever last? More often than not, when you lose weight very quickly you are losing not fat, but water weight and muscle. Our bodies are for the most part water. We need water to maintain vital functions within our body. Once you lose water weight, you will quickly put the weight back on once your body maintains a proper electrolyte balance and replenish the water that you lost. Fad diets are unhealthy and can even mess up body functions that will help you lose weight. These diets usually talk a good game about focusing on one form of nutritional information while trying to virtually eliminate others that are vital to maintaining proper homeostasis within the body such as low carb diets. Protein is important for building muscles, but carbohydrates are what are broken down into simple sugars for our body to use as energy. When we compromise this balance and go to extremes, our bodies go into defense mode and will adapt to given circumstances. This is not without sacrifice either. We run the risk of destroying our metabolism. We also mess up our hormonal balance as well. Certain foods help us to digest and utilize vitamins and minerals. Often these foods are banned in certain fad diets. Why do we subject our bodies to such extremes? Maintaining a healthy weight is imperative to our health, but we seem to be overlooking the importance that food is to our basic biological functions. Usually once you try a diet and it doesn’t work, you go find another one. This dieting is not good for our bodies. Your body is constantly trying to adapt and therefore, the body is working to survive certain elements that you have voluntarily put it through. This can lead to suppressed immune systems and then you get ill. Once you diet and lose weight, you end up finding it too restrictive and than you go off the diet and resume eating like before. Then you start to gain weight the back and then some. You need to stop looking at fad diets. The key to weight loss is about eating healthy and exercise. Once you change your lifestyle and implement these two key components, you will lose weight and keep it off permanently.
