Do I Have Bad Eating Habits?
Most people have some form of bad eating habits. We’re human beings; most of our lives are governed by habits and routines. That’s how we get through the day. By becoming aware of our habits and finding those that are not resourceful is the first step to changing them. Here they come:
Skipping Breakfast
Many people share this bad eating habit. You’re running late and you pour a coffee for the road. You get to work and someone’s brought in donuts. You scarf one down and you’re good to go! If this is your morning routine, you simply must change it.Most people use time as an excuse for skipping a nutritious breakfast. With a little planning and possibly a change in your belief system, you can eliminate this excuse. Studies show that eating a high protein breakfast can help you lose weight and keep it off. It provides you with energy after your overnight fast and starts your metabolism for the day ahead. Preparing some meals ahead of time can help you solve many eating habits that are not good for you. Hard-boil some eggs and keep them in the fridge. Pop a couple of slices of whole wheat bread into the toaster and peel the egg. Wash it down with a glass of milk and you’ve had a high protein, nutritious meal in about 2 minutes. Time is not a valid excuse.
Eating Sporadically
This may be one of the worst of the eating habits. You skip breakfast and sometimes lunch. You approach dinner with a ravenous look in your eye and will eat anything resembling food. You then continue eating until your head hits the pillow. I think we can all see the problem with this scenario. When you go for long periods of time without nourishing your body it goes into starvation mode. Your metabolism slows and may actually use protein from muscles to feed the body. When you do eat, it stores some as fat as a defense against the next fasting period. If you have these bad habits, try eating 4 or 5 small meals a day. These meals should be all-natural, whole foods with a low glycemic rating. Have lean protein with every meal and include plenty of fruits and vegetables. Nuts and seeds work great as a snack and are more satisfying and nutritious than processed snack foods.
Eating Too Fast
If you have the bad habits above, you likely have this one as well. When you miss meals you’re likely to eat too fast and not chew your food properly. The problem here is that the digestion process actually begins in your mouth. Enzymes in your saliva start the digestive process. So gulping your food is likely to cause the food to pass through your system undigested. These are only a few of many bad eating habits. Slow down some and eat healthy foods on a consistent basis. Take the time to chew your food properly to obtain all the nutrients that it contains. Become more aware of your bad eating habits and create new, healthy ones.
