Weight Loss Support Groups

Research studies on weight loss support groups show that there are definite benefits to be derived. There is more accountability among the members to other members. They help each other along providing motivation and support. There are many online support groups to choose.

Support Group Research

In 1981, the British Medical Journal reported on three studies of weight loss support groups that were peer-led.

The first study involved 33 women. While they were part of a peer-led weight loss support group, participants dropped an average of 14.3 lbs. By the end of the year, most had kept all of the weight off.

The second study involved 1000 people who were part of a support group. They monitored their weight from 1 to 5 years later, and found that even after 5 years the weight was 5 – 6 % less than their starting weight.

The third study surveyed more than 10,000 participants before and immediately after participation, and found an average weight loss of 15.2 pounds.

Research for Online Support Groups

Online forums, chat rooms, and membership sites offer dieters many options to converse and support others in their weight loss efforts. Recent studies show that internet based weight loss support groups are effective in achieving weight loss goals.

Brown Medical School performed a study to determine if internet programs aided weight loss efforts. They divided subjects into two groups:

  1. Internet Education Group
  2. Internet Behavioral Group

Both groups received a personal weight loss interview and web access to weight loss resources.

The second group also received email support, online access to weight loss support groups and tracked their food and exercises details.

The second group with group support lost more weight over six months than the first group.

As you can see, studies are showing that support groups help contribute to weight loss.
