The easiest way to start exercising is to begin a walking program. I started walking my dog twice a day three years ago. Our walks now range anywhere from 3 to 5 miles per day. This is in addition to my other activities. When you persist in making changes, it creates a “snowball effect” and the weight just starts dropping.

If weather or safety is an issue, many shopping malls and arenas have walking programs.

These are great programs as there is a social aspect to them. Studies show that people who exercise to lose weight as part of a social network make greater fitness gains and permanent weight loss.

Absolutely! I find that this is the most enjoyable way to exercise and lose weight. Again, the added bonus is a social setting. I should mention here that if you join a bowling league and scarf down pizza and beer, you will sabotage your weight-loss efforts. Moderation is important. There’s a saying that “you can’t exercise away poor nutrition”.

If you already golf, get yourself a pull-cart and walk the course. I do this myself. It’s a great stress reliever as you look around and enjoy the beauty of the course. Stress creates cortisol which causes weight gain in addition to other illness.

You don’t have to train like a champion to lose weight. It is important to exercise to lose weight by finding activities you enjoy and to do them consistently. Mix it up to keep your program fresh. Make a commitment to yourself to keep active and healthy.
